THE PORT OF PORTO ALEGRE,
THE LARGEST PORT REGENERATION PROJECT IN LATIN AMERICA
The project encompasses the old port of Porto Alegre, Brazil (Cais Maua), which covers an area of 187,000 m² and a length of 2 km. The regeneration of Casi Maua comprises redesigning, incorporating and integrating the port into the city, in addition to the creation of a new centrality with economic, social and cultural activities. It envisages reconditioning the old port zone through the construction asnd operation of a set of service-sector developments: an office complex, a hotel and convention centre, a shopping mall and an extensive commercial area for restaurants and leisure activities, along with additional cultural services such as a museum and a continuous programme of activities.
GIS has been participating since 2007 in designing such services, including comceptual design, market studies, economic and financial feasibility studies, and design of preliminary technical plans. It is also involved in the formation of an investment group. After GIS’s tender won the public bidding process, “Porto Cais Mauá Do Brasil S.A.” was incorporated as the licensee company, wherein GIS was represented from the outset. The project is currently embarking on the construction stage and is considered the largest waterfront project under development in Latin America.
